Starting your calisthenics journey can be both exciting and challenging. To set you up for success, Chris asks top calisthenics athletes from around the world what are three essential tips they wish they knew before diving in. From the stellar cast of athletes that he met up with in Madrid: Jasi Svilenova, Malin ‘Malle’ Jansson, Leeva, Radoslav Radev, Nathan Bosech, Maya Silva, Victor Allendes, Dai-Long Huynh, Iliesse Belasri, Youssef Moro and Tony Gaste we learn the following tips:

Mindset matters:

Be patient and understand that progress takes time. Calisthenics is about building strength, mobility, and skill gradually. Do not expect overnight results.

Be consistent and realize that consistent practice is key. Even short daily sessions yield better results than sporadic intense workouts. Set a routine that fits your lifestyle and stick to it.

Master the basics first:

A good warm-up before any exercise is key to avoiding injuries, even if you are working on the basics. Form over everything because before attempting advanced moves, the focus has to be on mastering the basics. Proper form prevents injuries and ensures efficient muscle engagement.

Nail the fundamental exercises – push-ups, pull-ups and dips - they form the foundation of calisthenics. Then add on Progressions (e.g., incline push-ups, assisted pull-ups) as these can help you advance.

Find a mentor/coach:

If possible, have a mentor or coach who can guide you through the correct way to execute the exercises to avoid injuries and to progress further with your goals.

Nutrition and recovery are vital:

You need to fuel your body because calisthenics demands energy; so, prioritize whole foods—lean proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats and remember to stay hydrated.

Listen to your body because rest and sleep are especially important. Muscles grow during rest so aim for quality sleep and allow time for recovery between workouts.

Remember, calisthenics is a journey, not a sprint. Enjoy the process, celebrate small victories, and keep pushing toward your goals!
