Caffeine is a natural stimulant that acts on the central nervous system, making you feel more awake and alert; it does so by blocking adenosine receptors in your brain: adenosine is a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and relaxation. Caffeine also acts on the skeletal and muscular systems by increasing the release of adrenaline and in so doing enhance physical performance: adrenaline prepares the body for a ‘fight or flight’ response.
